Wear Red Canada

What is Wear Red Canada?

Wear Red Canada is an important national awareness event that occurs every February 13th. The main goal of Wear Red Canada is to raise awareness about heart and vascular health for women in Canada.

Proudly put on each year by the Canadian Women’s Heart Health Alliance and funded by the Canadian Women's Heart Health Centre.

Why do we need to raise awareness of heart disease in women?

Most people don’t realize that heart and vascular disease is a woman’s greatest health threat, killing more women each year than breast and all gynecological cancers combined.

Heart and vascular disease is the leading cause of hospitalization and premature death for women in Canada. The good news is 80% of the risk of developing heart disease is preventable through healthy lifestyles and preventive treatments.

Some of the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of a heart condition are different for women than they are for men and it’s important for women, their families, and their health care providers to be aware of what to look for.

For example, there are conditions that some women experience during pregnancy, like gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, and pre-eclampsia, that can put them at a much greater risk of having a future cardiovascular event.

What events are taking place to celebrate Wear Red Canada?

On February 13, the Wear Red Canada team will host a 1.5 hour long online webinar where attendees can learn about women’s heart health from health professionals and women with lived experience. Topics include heart healthy eating, exercise, prevention and risk management.
